Say "student pilot," and most people think of a youngster chasing a dream. In reality, today's fledgling is likely a middle-aged adult who's not only chasing, but actually fulfilling a lifelong ambition to be a pilot. The average student pilot today is in his 30s, and the typical average active pilot is a decade older. In addition, more than 25 percent of all U.S. pilots with current medical certificates are in their 50s. And some pilots learn to fly after they retire.

As long as you can pass the medical you can get a private pilot certificate. You can always look into the light sport aircraft also.

All the people I know loosing their medicals are going to light sport.

Hi everyone! Like a lot of guys I've always wanted to be a comm., instr. rated helo pilot. I'm 52 and in great shape. Is it realistic to think I can still become a comm. pilot? Do co's hiring pass over 50yr. old's? What do you think?  I live  near Ft. Laud., Fl and I was thinking about going over to the Helicopter Academy in Pembroke Pines to stick my nose in the door, any advice from you pros out there? thanks all!!  See you in the air!, Daniel 954-798-2136

As long you have your good physical health, sound mind, and most importantly...the desire...you are never to old to learn a new trick.  There are other 'commercial' aviation jobs than just flying for the airlines.  You could become a flight instructor, an on-demand charter pilot, aircraft salesman, forest fire and pipeline patrol, and so much more.  Follow your dreams!
