It depends: for most student pilots, an aircraft such as a Piper Cherokee or Cessna 172 is probably the most suitable, although there are a number of other aircraft that can provide an excellent introduction to flight while offering reasonable operating costs (for example, the Cessna 152 or Piper Tomahawk).

It also depends on what your bidget is and more importantly what aircraft are available to rent in your area. Many pilots learned to fly in Cessna 152/172s and Piper Warriors but increasingly newer aircraft such as the Diamond Katana are making larger inroads into the flight training market.

Also with the introduction of the Light Sport Category there is a multitude of new planes that are available for training. Ultimately, the choice is yours and you should choose the plane that you feel most comfortable in that is within your budget.
