I just had an "interesting" flight lesson with a new instructor (new for me, he's been around a while).  I've stretched my PPL training over a couple years due to life, schedule and occasionally finances and the net result is I've flown with at least 6 different instructors (had one flight school close and different instructors move on to other jobs, etc).

Today's instructor told me that it was against the POH and school's SOPs to land a Cessna 172N with 10 degrees flaps.  Now this is a first I've ever heard this and I've done at least 100 landings with instructors with me while I've landed with 10 flaps.  Occasionally I chose 20 or even 40 but often 10 seems to be just fine.

In our debrief I grabbed my POH (which is for a 1977 Cessna 172N) and it clearly states: "Normal landing approaches can be made with power-on or power-off with any flap setting desired."  Seemed clear to me.  I've looked online and while the most common POH is for the 1978 model, it states the exact same thing.  I showed him and he said it that it didn't matter what the POH said, that it was against the flight school SOPs.

After we parted ways I immediately checked the flight school SOP's  and couldn't find any such reference.  I'll check with the CFI on Monday.

So in the meantime, has anyone here every run across this?

The abbreviated checklist says "FULL FLAPS," the expanded says "ANY." Normal practice is to use FULL flaps unless the situation dictates otherwise. The rationale for the FULL FLAPS is to allow you to continue flying at a slower airspeed so that you touch down at a slower ground speed that you would otherwise. Your new instructor is not wrong, per se, but he/she should be able to explain the WHYs of everything you do, or get another instructor. IMHO.
